A Precious Gem of a Tale
Thursday, August 27, 2009The Necklace – Cheryl Jarvis
Price: RM17.90
As we walk through life there are things which we will fall in love with and be able to afford. There will also be things we will fall head over heels in love with and know that we’ll never be able to afford. What do we do then? Here is a tale that offers one possibility.
Imagine that you are walking down the street one day and you pass a jeweller’s store. It’s a route you’ve walked many times. As always you pause to have a look. There in the window is the most beautiful diamond necklace. It takes your breath away and you can just see yourself wearing it. The price tag? US$37,000.
The Necklace is the true story of one woman who sees just such a necklace and falls in love with it. She knows that she will never be able to afford it alone but it keeps nagging at her. What does she do? What if there were more women, she wonders. Several weeks and dozens of phone calls later, 13 women from the town of Ventura come together to buy the necklace. What one woman could not do alone, a group of women certainly could.
They were 13 ordinary women, from greatly different backgrounds. They seemed to have nothing in common until the dream of owning this necklace brings them together. The necklace weaves in and out of each woman’s life, reflecting her past, defining her present, making promises for her future. Lending sparkle in surprising and unexpected ways, the necklace comes to mean something dramatically different to each of the 13 women.
The women show us how they rise above their individual personalities and politics to join together in an uncommon journey as they transform a symbol of exclusivity into a symbol of inclusiveness. They discover that sharing the necklace among themselves is only the beginning; the more they shared with others, the more profound this experience became, turning into an extraordinary journey and uniting a whole community.
Read and find out how a small circle of women with a whimsical dream, believed in the promise of a possibility and in doing so changed their lives and touched the lives of all in their community. It’s not very often that you find a book with so much heart and soul. Read it and dream. Who knows, with a little help, the dream might just come true.
