BookXcess’ First Ever Storytelling Good Times!

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

On 16th May, in conjunction of Children’s Books Week, BookXcess had the honour to organize a storytelling session by inviting Anne Elizabeth Ooi. This is our very first ever storytelling session & it was indeed a historical one. Therefore, we’re keeping records of this very special event in our Blog archive! ;)

According to Wikipedia, “Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, images and sounds often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and in order to instill moral values.”

Do you recall as a young child, that our teachers or parents or even grandparents telling us stories during leisure or bedtimes? Good times, don’t you agree? Back then, we may not have volumes of Disney stories with “happily ever afters” but we do have our very own local & classic folktales that has its own version of “happily ever afters” and moral values… Such traditions must be carried down to our new generations of kids.

These are some of the pictures taken on 16th May that we would like to share with our BookXcess friends (Anne doing her magic, and kids entranced by her!) :)

BookXcess is located in a quirky little mall called Amcorp Mall. It is not the largest mall in Malaysia. It is not the most famous mall in Malaysia either. So what makes Amcorp Mall special? (Other than having BookXcess as one of its tenants, HEHE.)

Ask anyone who’s been to Amcorp Mall and almost always they’ll tell you that the best thing about the mall is the weekly flea market! Touted to be the first mall behind the flea-market-in-mall concept, it is arguably the best flea market around Klang Valley. It is said to be the best simply because it is true to the spirit of what a flea market should be. Unlike other ‘flea markets’ you find in other malls around Klang Valley that sell trendy, brand-new products, Amcorp Mall’s flea market has antiques, records, collectibles, secondhand goodies, homemade food and so much more.

Some might not be used to the idea of shopping for second-hand stuff, but you’d be surprised at the quality of some things, and the prices! Where else can you bring home a bag full of interesting knickknacks and a full tummy after having a meal there, all for less than RM100? Amcorp Mall is a budget shopper’s delight, and with the current economic downturn we are seeing more cost-conscious shoppers frequenting here during the weekends.

For bookworms, Amcorp Mall is on the map of good places to go book shopping around Klang Valley. You have yours truly, of course. :D BookXcess sells brand new books at a fraction of the price of similar books at bookshops elsewhere. There’s also a book rental shop called My Book Place (check out their blog), which is suitable for book lovers on a tighter budget. You can read a book for a nominal fee of RM5 – that’s even cheaper than watching a movie! Besides that, there’s a Popular bookstore just below BookXcess, a good place to go for quality and affordable stationery. We can attest to its quality as we often buy stationery from there. They also sell the latest bestsellers too. And finally, you can source for good books when you browse the flea market, as there are many vendors selling second-hand books.

If you have not been to Amcorp Mall, you must come here and experience it for yourself! The mall is very accessible. If you are driving, go along Federal Highway and take the Jalan Timur exit. Amcorp Mall is right next to the exit from both ways, so if you drive slow you can’t miss it. There are outdoor and indoor parking at Amcorp Mall. If you’re taking public transport, take the LRT line heading towards Kelana Jaya and get out at the Taman Jaya station. It is just a stone’s throw away from the LRT.

Amcorp Mall is not some glitzy mall with luxury brand shops and multiple cinema theatres, but it has its own charms. It’s a great shopping spot for families as there’s something for everybody. Personally, we think the best thing about Amcorp Mall is BookXcess. But we’re a bit biased, of course! :P
