In the first and second lecture, Soros discusses his general theory of reflexivity and its application to financial markets, providing insight into the recent financial crisis. The closing lecture focuses on the way ahead, closely examining the increasingly important economic and political role that China will play in the future. “The Budapest Lectures” presents these five seminal talks into one volume, which offers a condensed and highly readable summary of Soros’ world view.

Origins: The Creative Spark Behind Japan’s Best Products Designs by Shu Hagiwara RRP: RM122.50 Price: RM29.90
Japan has a long history of combining the newest technology with clever, striking & intricate design, the result of the traditional aesthetic of monozukuri, or “the art of making things.” For this book, Shu Hagiwara has selected forty Japanese-designed products that have had a profound impact on the post-World War II period, & looks at the original ideas that sparked the creation of these products. What were the engineers thinking when they designed the Honda Super Cub–what many consider to be the best motorcycle of all time? What traditional craft inspired Isamu Noguchi’s lantern, Akari? From Hagiwara’s text, we learn much about these elegant, witty and beautiful designs, as well as the process from inception to product. The stunning photographs of the celebrated Masashi Kuma give further expression to these ideas.

Jesus by Deepak Chopra RRP : RM 104.90 Price : RM 24.90
The narrative focuses on the mysterious span of time in Christ’s life between the ages of 12 and 30. Chopra portrays the young adult Jesus as a malleable figure at the center of a host of pivotal political, cultural and religious shifts. The threads of his spiritual leadership become evident during these formative years, but Christ must devote himself to growing in enlightenment about the full nature of his identity and message. Chopra’s narration may not always maintain a natural flow of dialogue among characters, but the ethereal power of his voice and the evocative manner in which he sets the stage remain effective. Perhaps the most compelling elements of the story line involve Judas and Mary Magdalene, two of New Testament history’s most complicated and controversial figures.

Mismatch by Tami Hoag (Author) Jen Taylor (Narrator) RRP : RM 69.90 Price : RM 19.90
A Classic Romance– Bronwynn Prescott Pierson had certainly made a mess of things! She’d left a disloyal groom at the altar, driven to Vermont, and now stood, near-tears, on the steps of a ramshackle Victorian house in her satin wedding gown. When a gorgeous, all-American hunk emerged from the woods, she didn’t know whether to chase him away with a stick or run into his arms! The breathtaking redhead with the lost-fawn look in her eyes seized Wade Grayson’s heart in a flash and convinced him she needed a keeper, but Bronwynn vowed she was swearing off men for at least a year–and besides, a stuffed-shirt politician with no sense of adventure was definitely not for her! Wade figured her for a frivolous heiress, yet he found the temptress with the legs of a goddess utterly enchanting. She stole his cigarettes, dared him to climb trees, and freed his spirit to fall in love. But could they find a place to bridge their worlds and cherish each other for always?
Tales From The Perilous Realm by J. R. R. Tolkien RRP : RM 89.90 Price : RM 19.90
For the first time in A-format, the definitive collection of Tolkien’s four acclaimed modern classic ‘fairie’ tales in the vein of The Hobbit. Farmer Giles of Ham is fat and unheroic, but — having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant — is called upon to do battle when the dragon Chrysophylax comes to town; The Adventures of Tom Bombadil tells by way of verse of Tom’s many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls; Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle who sets out to paint the perfect tree; Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children. The four tales are written with the same skill, quality and hallmarks that made Tolkien’s Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are finally together in a volume which reaffirms Tolkien’s place as a master storyteller for readers young and old.

Celebrating Mother’s Day with BookXcess!
Saturday, May 1, 2010“Mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.”~Marion C. Garretty
Do you know that it was the Greeks who first celebrated Mother’s Day as an honour to Rhea, the mother of all gods? That’s the legend of Mother’s Day… Around 1660’s, Christians celebrated the 4th Sunday of Lent as the mothering Sunday, honouring all mothers of England. In the year 1914, when the American president Woodrow Wilson proclaimed every second Sunday of May as a national holiday officially declaring a Mother’s Day. This is an ode to all mothers and Mother’s Day is celebrated to honour all mothers; an expression of appreciation for the hardships they had gone through. On this special day, husbands cherish their wives, children appreciate their mother, grandchildren honour their grandmothers, friends admires & cheers for their single mum or mother-to-be friends…
To understand Mother’s Day and what it really means is to understand the person in our life called ‘Mother’; the very essence of the meaning of Mother’s Day. Mother is one who nurtures you in her womb for nine months and brings you into the world to enjoy the utmost blessing on earth, Life. Mother is one who guides you through your infancy and turns the soft, helpless creature to the powerful and successful YOU. She is the guardian angel protecting you and supporting you, feeling for you and serving you silently always with a smile on her face. She prides herself watching you grow and never fails to offer you a shoulder to cry on whenever you need. She is every child’s best friend.
On Mother’s Day, we should make the effort to remember and pray for that very special person in our life. For without whom we would not have been what we are today; a day to prove that all her efforts, towards making us a complete person, has been worthwhile and makes her feel proud for us. Mother’s Day is a day to be grateful to God for being so kind as to bless us with an angel in the form of Mother.
Wondering how to express your love and affection to your mother, this coming Mother’s Day? Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to let your mom know how special she is to you. BookXcess Reviews The 4th Secret of the One Minute Manager – Ken Blanchard & Margret McBride
Wednesday, December 23, 2009
The 4th Secret of the One Minute Manager – Ken Blanchard & Margret McBride
Price: RM19.90
1. So, what’s this book about?
The 4th Secret of the One Minute Manager (also known as The One Minute Apology) is a follow up to the bestselling book The One Minute Manager. That said, it is not necessary to have read the latter in order to read the former. In a nutshell, The 4th Secret shows how an apology can be a powerful tool to make things right between the people in your life and yourself.
2. What’s special about it?
The 4th Secret is co-authored by Ken Blanchard, who is the co-author of the famous The One Minute Manager and there’s also a foreword by Spencer Johnson, who’s best known for his evergreen self-help book Who Moved My Cheese? and also co-author of The One Minute Manager.
3. What did you think about this book?
The 4th Secret is an easy read. It is a slim book and the font is larger than usual, so a quick reader can finish this in a sitting and a slow reader will not take too long consuming it. The fourth secret is revealed through a modern parable that is easy to relate by any reader. Like most self-help books, it feels like it is imparting knowledge that we already know. The difference is that the lesson is summarised so well that remembering it is not difficult at all, which makes it that little bit more effective as a self-help book.
4. Would you recommend this book to anyone?
This is a great book for people in the workforce. However, The 4th Secret can be easily applied to anyone’s life, as it is really about how an apology can improve the relationships in your life. A hardcover book for only RM19.90, it’s definitely a book that’s affordable and more than suitable as a gift to your friend, family or employee.
5. Random question: What other self-help books do you recommend?
I really enjoy books by Paul Arden, who’s most famous for Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite. However, I prefer his first book It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be. The first title sold like hot cakes last year when BookXcess had it in stock!
