Tensegrities are of interest in structural design studies because of their lightweight property, aesthetic and modern look. Usually, the structures are built in such a way that struts are connected, which might not be the original definition for tensegrity. Open tensegrity systems must, in order to be stable, provide forces to the foundation or to secondary constructions that are beyond the scope of the forces resulting from their own weight and the external loads. Open systems have the advantage that the pressure elements don’t have to be used as diagonals, as in closed systems. As a result, shorter pressure sections are possible with open systems, which can be executed with a smaller cross section. A closed tensegrity system is a self-sufficient array of struts and tendons, arranged in such a way that the struts and tendons enforce an ongoing structural integrity in the overall assemblage. These are termed as “real” tensegrity systems. Closed systems are, regardless of their storage, inherently stable.

Tensegrity structures consist of isolated compression members (rigid bars) suspended by a continuous network of tension members (cables). Tensegrity structures can be used as variable geometry truss (VGT) mechanisms by actuating links to change their length. This paper will present a new method of position finding for tensegrity structures that can be used for actuation as VGT mechanisms. Tensegrity structures are difficult to understand and mathematically model. This difficulty is primarily because tensegrity structures only exist in specific stable tensegrity positions. Previous work has focused on analysis based on statics, dynamics, and virtual work approaches. This work considers tensegrity structures from a kinematic viewpoint. The kinematic approach leads to a better understanding of the conditions under which tensegrity structures exist in the stable positions. The primary understanding that comes from this kinematic analysis is that stable positions for tensegrity structures exist only on the boundaries of nonassembly of the structure. This understanding also allows the tensegrity positions to be easily found. This paper presents a method of position finding based on kinematic constraints and applies that method to several example tensegrity structures.

Tensegrity is the word coined by Buckminster Fuller as a contraction of tensional integrity. A tensegrity system is established when a set of discontinuous compressive components interacts with a set of continuous tensile components to define a stable volume in space. Tensegrity structures are mechanically stable not because of the strength of individual members but because of the way the entire structure distributes and balances mechanical loads. Tensile forces naturally transmit themselves over the shortest distance between two points, so the members of a tensegrity system are precisely positioned to best withstand stress. Thus, tensegrity systems offer a maximum amount of strength for a given amount of material. Man-made structures have traditionally been designed to avoid developing large tensile stresses. In contrast, nature always uses a balance of tension and compression. Tensegrity principles apply at essentially every size-scale in the human body. Macroscopically, the bones that constitute our skeleton are pulled up against the force of gravity and stabilized in a vertical form by the pull of tensile muscles, tendons and ligaments. Microscopically, a tensegrity structure has been proposed for the skeleton of cells. This report contains the results of a feasibility study and literature survey to explore the potential of applying tensegrity principles in designing materials with desired functionalities. The goal is to assess if further study of the principles of tensegrity may be exploited as an avenue for producing new materials that have intrinsic capabilities for adapting to changing loads (self-healing), as with the ongoing reconstruction of living bone under loading. This study contains a collection of literature that has been categorized into the areas of structures, mathematics, mechanics, and, biology. The topics addressed in each area are discussed. Ultimately, we conclude that because tensegrity is fundamentally a description of structure, it may prove useful for describing existing materials, but does not provide guidance in the development of new materials because it does not address the issue of how such structures form.

The concept of responsive architecture has inspired the idea structures which are adaptable and change in order to better fit the user. This idea can be extended to structural engineering with the implementing of structures which change to better take on their external loading. The following text explores the utilization of active control for tensegrity systems in order to achieve an adaptable structure. To start, a background of the physical characteristics of these structures is given along with the methods which are used to find their form. Next, the different methods which have been previously used to achieve active control in tensegrity are reviewed as well as the objectives they intended to achieve. From there, the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) algorithm is introduced as a possible method to be used in designing active control. A planar tensegrity beam is described, whose form was found by the force density method. A simulation is then conducted, which applies the LQR algorithm to this structure for the purposes of active control. This simulation served both to demonstrate the force density and LQR methods, as well as to study how different control parameters and actuator placements effects the efficiency of the control. This text concludes with a discussion of the results of this simulation.
